After nearly 18 years of heartbreak, a couple finally gets pregnant — thanks to AI that can spot “hidden” sperm invisible to the human eye.
About 10–15% of men trying to have kids face infertility, often due to azoospermia (that’s doctor-speak for “no sperm in sight”).
Until now, options were pretty grim: donor sperm or painful surgery.
Enter STAR, a new AI system short for Sperm Tracking and Recovery, to search for life of a different kind. It scans millions of images from a sample and can find a handful of viable sperm — even if doctors see nothing.
The process is quick, gentle (no spinning samples to bits), and costs about $3,000 — way less than most IVF rounds.
The first success story? “Rosie” and her husband, who’d tried everything for 19 years. One AI scan, three viable sperm, and five months later: baby on the way.
My take? It’s wild to think a AI can find hope where science had given up. If this is what’s possible in a petri dish, maybe we’re just scratching the surface of what AI can do for human stories.

My take? It’s like getting a text from an unexpected relative, a little weird, and you’re not sure if you should reply or unplug the thing. But for some, maybe it’s the company they need.
